A frameless shower door in San Diego runs $1,450 to $2,600 for the most common single-door-plus-fixed-panel layout. Corner units go $2,400 to $3,900 and large double doors $3,200 to $5,400. Below is what actually moves that number, and what a quote should itemize before you sign.
| Configuration | Typical Installed Price | What Drives the Number |
|---|---|---|
| Single pivot door + fixed panel (60 inch opening) | $1,450 - $2,600 | Most common San Diego layout. 3/8 inch glass on the fixed panel, 1/2 inch on the door, two wall-mount hinges. |
| Single door, no fixed panel (36 inch opening) | $1,150 - $1,900 | Smaller bath or a door-only retrofit. Fewer parts, less glass, faster install. |
| Neo-angle, three panels (corner shower) | $2,400 - $3,900 | Two fixed panels plus a door, two glass-to-glass 90 or 45 degree clamps, heavier hardware set. |
| Double door, large opening (over 60 inches) | $3,200 - $5,400 | Two 1/2 inch doors meeting at a strike jamb. Needs a header check and heavier hinges. |
| Glass-to-glass corner with no wall on either side | $1,900 - $3,400 | More clamps, more fabrication, and a template that has to be exact because there is no wall to shim against. |
| Sliding frameless bypass (top rail only) | $1,700 - $3,100 | Full-length header rail anchored to studs, floor guide instead of a bottom track. |
| Item | Added Cost | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2 inch glass instead of 3/8 inch | +$180 to +$420 | Required for doors wider than 30 inches and anything over 78 inches tall. It is not an upsell, it is a deflection requirement. |
| Low-iron (Starphire) glass | +$250 to +$600 | Removes the green edge tint. Worth it next to white marble or a view; hard to justify against dark tile. |
| Factory hydrophobic coating | +$180 to +$450 | We recommend it on every install in San Diego County. Uncoated glass etches here within about two years. |
| Specialty hardware finish | +$120 to +$500 | Brass, matte black, and oil-rubbed bronze cost more than chrome and add roughly a week of lead time. |
| Backing added behind tile | +$150 to +$400 | If there is no stud where the hinge lands, we open a small section, add blocking, and repair it. Drywall anchors will sag within a year. |
| Curb repair or re-slope | +$250 to +$900 | Older homes often have a curb that runs downhill. Glass set on a bad curb leaks no matter how well it is sealed. |
Ranges reflect actual San Diego County installs. Your quote is firm and in writing after templating.
If glass is templated before tile is finished, the panel is cut to a guess. When it does not fit, the panel is non-returnable and you pay twice. We template off finished, cured tile only.
A frameless door hangs its entire weight on two or three hinges. If those screws land in drywall or 1/4 inch backer, the door sags, the gap goes uneven, and the seal fails. Adding blocking is cheap. Rebuilding a wall after the fact is not.
Water follows gravity, not silicone. A curb out of level by more than about 1/8 inch across the opening will push water out the door even with a perfect sweep. We check it before ordering glass.
Template to install is typically 7 to 12 business days for standard clear glass in a stocked finish. Low-iron, brass, curved, or pattern glass runs 10 to 18 business days. Install day itself is usually 3 to 5 hours for a single door and fixed panel, and a full day for a neo-angle or a double door. We run the shower and watch every seam before we pack up.
If you plan to stay in the house, usually yes. The visible difference is large and frameless adds usable width because there is no frame eating the opening. If it is a rental or a flip, semi-frameless is the better value.
We do not install customer-supplied glass. Frameless panels are cut to a specific opening, and if a measurement is off, the liability lands on whoever hung it. We template and supply so the fit is our responsibility.
No. Fixed panels can usually stay at 3/8 inch. Doors and any panel wider than about 30 inches should be 1/2 inch so they do not flex when opened.
Box store doors are stock sizes with a frame that hides an out-of-square opening. A frameless door has no frame to hide behind, so it is templated, cut, tempered, and hung to your wall. That is a different product.
